Chromeo - Business Casual
“Don your deck shoes, carelessly knot your cashmere knit and slip into some chinos” is by far the best press release opening I have read and the most fitting opening for the likes of Jewish/Arabic, electro partnership, Chromeo. Business Casual is the third album from the Montreal based duo Dave 1 and P-Thugg and mixed by Phillipe Zdar who is the man responsible for Phoenix’s Grammy-award winning album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.
Maintaining their usual playful, 80s disco beats, Chromeo have moved into more reflective territories with a more innovative sound that has pushed them forward from their previous releases. The album boasts flawless production throughout with stand out tracks being the glittering disco of ‘When The Night Falls’ featuring backing vocals from Beyonce’s sister, Solange Knowles and the string-filled ‘Don’t Walk Away.’ Lyrically, the thirty-nine minutes are focused on girls and dancing with hidden darkness of love gone wrong and tangled affairs.
Business Casual provides the perfect mix of retro and futurist with plenty of glossy synths and guitar solos on ‘The Right Type’ while emphasizing their unique hybrid of Rick James meets Hall & Oates electro-funk on ‘Grow Up.’ And honestly, who would say no to Rick James and Hall & Oates in their lives? Not me and definitely not Chromeo.
