Jimmy Eat World - Brixton Academy November 23, 2010
If you minus the down time between touring and recording, Arizona rockers Jimmy Eat World continue to define much of the music scene since their 2001 release Bleed American (later renamed and self titled after 9/11). With their 15+ year career continuously gaining younger and more adoring fans, the quartet had arrived to a sold out Brixton Academy in light of their newest release and seventh studio album, Invented.
Although promoting a new album, they didn’t seem to be in a rush to play new material as they opened with ‘Bleed American’ and ‘Praise Chorus’ before leading into ‘My Best Theory,’ the first single from the new album. The excited crowd were not left disappointed as the evening progressed with a setlist full of Jimmy Eat World classics from the thunderous ‘Pain’ to ‘Your New Aesthetic’ while frontman, Jim Adkins sang with the same emotion and urgency that led them to become the original emo kings they are today.
The powerful yet moving ‘23’ was a stand out moment as they played amongst waves of blue light that highlighted their silhouettes and made their shadows grow on the Academy walls to provide one of those spine tingling moments. The acoustic guitar made its appearance for the heart swelling ‘Hear You Me’ accompanied by a glowing landscape of lighters and camera phones and word for word sing-along.
Knowing exactly what the crowd wanted, Jimmy Eat World saved the best for last as they returned for an encore of ‘Get It Faster,’ ‘The Middle’ and to close the night, ‘Sweetness,’ which provided the loudest sing back I have ever heard while keeping the same rawness it had 10 years ago. The foursome remained on stage with overwhelmed smiles that soaked up the never ending cheers and bright lights that highlighted a crowd of 5,000 adoring fans.
