Ok Go | Electric Ballroom | July 2010
These days, it seems like a matter of months before a band starts their descent from over hyped, NME gods to joining the rest of the skinny jeaned, straw hat hipsters on top of the scrap pile. So, you would think a band like Ok Go with their paisley shirts and gimmicky dance moves, would have joined that pile a long time ago. Not at all. The Chicago/LA foursome are back and better than ever with new album Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky and a short European tour.
With a packed Electric Ballroom, the boys clearly don’t do things by half as they burst their way through ‘Invincible’ with a wind machine blowing confetti all over the already sweaty crowd. After easing us in, they continued the pace with global phenomenon ‘A Million Ways’ and fuzz filled, ‘White Knuckles’ Focusing on the new album with the sensual bass lines of ‘I Want You So Bad I Can’t Breathe’ and the 80s sounding ‘End Love’ with Damian Kulash’s vocals that could give Prince a run for his money. The classics were all there as well with ‘Here It Goes Again’ and the angst drenched ‘Get Over It.’
Midway through the show, the bands crew set up a large fold out table and laid out fifteen hand bells of variable sizes while Ok Go slid white gloves on their hands. This small interval led to a gorgeous rendition of ‘What To Do’ with lush harmonies from Tim, Dan and Andy accompanying the chimes of the bells that literally felt like you were walking through heaven’s gates.
Saving the best until last, the guys provided an element of campiness with fur covered guitars and lasers firing out of every part of their instruments to fire up the crowd with ‘Do What You Want.’ With the confetti falling and their name in flashing lights, it’s clear Ok Go are still doing it right.
